This recipe is very simple to make and it might surprise you to learn that it does not contain sugar. Sugar is not necessary because the fruit has plenty of natural sweetness. You can use frozen mixed berries instead of frozen strawberries, if you prefer, and mash the finished sauce with a fork if you want a chunkier texture than the food mill gives you. Alternatively you can use an immersion blender if you have one; just use it in the crockpot. This recipe makes plenty of applesauce and you can serve it with cereal and yogurt at breakfast. The whole family will enjoy the flavor.
Semi-tart apples are recommended for this recipe and depending how tart they are you might want to sweeten the finished applesauce. If you are going to add sugar, add a little at a time until you have the desired result. You can freeze this recipe easily. Ladle it into freezer bags and press the air out, then seal them and lay them flat in the freezer until you are ready to use them. To thaw them out, just leave them in the refrigerator overnight.
If you have a sweet tooth but you prefer not to eat a lot of sugar, this recipe is perfect because you can satisfy your craving for something sweet without having to eat something unhealthy. This combination of apples, apple juice, and strawberries gives you a wonderful applesauce which you will want to make time and time again. This recipe is perfect for small kids, especially if they love sweet food and you are concerned about keeping their sugar intake at a reasonable level. Add some sultanas or a little vanilla extract before cooking, if you want. Dress up the strawberry applesauce after cooking it with cinnamon, honey, sugar, lemon juice or anything else you fancy. This is great served either warm or chilled.
