Crockpot Sloppy Joes

A sloppy joe is a combination of ground beef, onions, tomato sauce and seasonings and you can cook it on the stove or in a slow cooker. They are called sloppy joes because if you try to pick them up and eat them like a sandwich the filling spills out. You could still try and eat them that way but it is far more civilized to use a knife and fork, or a fork and spoon! The sloppiness of sloppy joes is part of their appeal though and the delicious meat mixture oozing out of the bread makes them look mouthwatering.

Crockpot sloppy joes use tomato sauce rather than thicker ketchup because the extra liquid is necessary in the crockpot recipe version of sloppy joe. If you are going to serve this mixture in a bun, only toast the bun if you prefer that texture. Buns are normally toasted when you add a filling, to stop the juices leaking through, but with this crockpot sloppy joes recipe it does not matter, since you are not eating it with your hands.

The meat comes out very soft and tender in the crockpot sloppy joes recipe too. You can serve sloppy joe with whole meal or white hamburger buns and perhaps some homemade coleslaw as a side dish. Feel free to halve the recipe if you are using a smaller crockpot. Ground chuck and ground beef are quite economical cuts of meat and this recipe gives them plenty of flavor. Crockpot sloppy joes make a great dinner for the whole family and this might become one of your family's favorite dishes.
