Juicy Turkey Meatloaf in Crockpot

This might be a very simple recipe but it is also amongst the most healthy crockpot recipes because there is hardly any fat. Turkey is naturally lean but it is still flavorful. The turkey is combined with cereal, eggs, sage, milk and onion powder, before being shaped into a loaf and slow-cooked to perfection. Cooking your turkey in a crockpot instead of in the oven means it will stay juicy and tender because in the crockpot there is nowhere for the moisture to escape.

Although some home cooks avoid slow-cooking poultry because they fear it is too lean and will dry out, poultry does slow-cook well. One very easy way to cook poultry in a crockpot is to add a can of soup and the poultry, and then just cook it on low until it is done. Moisture is unable to escape from a slow cooker so unless you overcook it by hours you will not dry the meat out. Turkey is a popular choice for thanksgiving and Christmas, but it is a pity only to make it once or twice a year, so what about choosing turkey over chicken the next time you visit the butcher or grocery store? Turkey has a different flavor and it makes a nice change, whether you opt for turkey breast or ground turkey.

You can vary the herbs in this recipe if you like, although sage does go particularly well with turkey. You might like to use thyme instead, or even a pinch of dried mixed herbs if that is all you have. Also, feel free to add a pinch of garlic powder or a couple of minced garlic cloves. You can add anything you fancy to this meatloaf, and you can serve your favorite veggies on the side. This is a very simple recipe and it tastes amazing.

Fluffy Mashed Potatoes with Fresh Herbs

Ingredients -

3 lbs ground turkey
1 ⅓ cups crushed Rice Chex cereal
1 teaspoon salt
¼ teaspoon black pepper
4 eggs
1 teaspoon onion powder
1½ cups milk
1 teaspoon rubbed sage

Preparation:

Stir together the eggs, salt, pepper, onion powder, sage, cereal and milk in a bowl.

Crumble the ground turkey over the top and combine well.

The meatloaf mixture will be wet and loose at this point, but that is fine.

Put the meatloaf in a dry 5 quart crockpot and cook for 5½ hours on low or until the meatloaf is 170 degrees F in the center.

You do not need to open the crockpot while the meatloaf is cooking.

If you do open the lid for any reason, you will need to add half an hour on to the total cooking time.
